Tata Refractories Limited at Belpahar is India’s leading refractory manufacturer. The plant was established in 1958 and has diversified into advanced ceramics. TRL is the first refractories company and also one among very few companies in India to have successfully implemented Integrated Management System in 2006 after adopting Quality Management System (QMS) (Current Standard ISO 9001: 2000) during the year 1994-95.
Environment Sustainability initiatives
Tata Refractories Ltd. has a separate department for environment management with an advanced laboratory housing variety of equipment for testing pollutant levels in air and water. All identified parameters of environment sustainability are monitored periodically to implement preventive and corrective actions on a priority basis. TRL is certified with ISO 14001:2004 (EMS) since 2006. Initiatives in specific directions include:
Air Quality Management
Installation of Pulsejet and Vibrator type filters to control dust-level in the area of operation
Installation of Electrostatic precipitators to control pollution from Chimney emissions in order to maintain ambient air quality below the norms.
Water Quality Management
An Effluent Treatment Plant has been installed at TRL for treating the tarry water generated from washing gases at the Producer Gas Plants.
The treated water is recycled in the washing process thereby optimising its use. The process also prevents industrial effluents from going outside the plant premises.
Effluent water is not allowed to come in contact with the ground water, preventing water pollution.
Domestic effluents are treated in settling tanks followed by filter beds at two locations. The treated water is used for agricultural purposes in surrounding villages.
Hazardous Waste Management
TRL has constructed a Secured Engg landfill, which is a pit made up of special synthetic materials lined in different layers. The lining at the base prevents any hazardous waste from coming in contact with land or water.
Wastes that cannot be sold out to authorised parties are stored safely by TRL.
Tree Plantation Initiatives
TRL is also a pioneer in tree plantations with a cumulative statistics of planting 3.54 Lakh trees in the last 18 years. TRL is directly involved in planting around 5000 saplings every year and though its community development activities distributes around 30,000 seedlings every year to the community.
