It is the presence of sound infrastructure and conducive atmosphere around communities that reinforces belief in the overall improvement in quality of life and a general sense of well being. The availability of all-weather motorable roads, electricity, clean water, a proper system of drainage, halls and spaces for community gatherings and recreation – all of these contribute to building the foundation of a strong and stable society.

Township Development

Rural Tribal locations in Odisha like Joda, Sukinda, Bamnipal and Belpahar can boast of having some of the most modern townships in India with amenities like clubs, schools, marketing complexes, co-operative stores and co-operative credit societies. Sports and recreational activities in these regions too have been provided for with adequate facilities. On the occasion of its centenary, Tata steel dedicated a Centenary Park, developed on wasteland to the people of Joda.

Rural Infrastructure

Bridges

TSRDS has built a bridge at Mutunda village, Birkela Panchayat, near Joda East Iron Ore Mines. This bridge has come as a boon to villagers, especially during the heavy water logging of the monsoons. The Dhamshala bridge was constructed at Chingudiapal to help students reach the Sourik High School and Sevashram school even in the rains.

»  Drainage System

In Bichakudi village of Joda municipality, near Joda West Iron Ore mines, TSRDS has constructed several drainage networks to address the problem of water logging. Previously, the region used to be virtually cut off by the heavy rains but now the situation is vastly improved.

Case Study - Model Villages

Sitalbasha

Tata Steel has undertaken a variety of initiatives to improve this village, by providing sanitation facilities, drinking water, biogas plants and much more. As a means to tackle the threat of frequent water borne diseases, Tata Steel has set up a hand pump and ring well to provide clean and safe drinking water in the region. Thirty-five toilets were also constructed to improve hygiene and sanitation.

A school building was set up with adequate facilities like electric fans and drinking water. Mid-day meals are also provided in the school. Three Self Help Groups in the village under the guidance of Tata Steel have taken up activities like pissiculture and vegetable farming. Biogas plants take care of the cooking needs of the families in the village and are also used for basic lighting during the night and for producing bio-fertilizers.

» Improving Connectivity

The 18 km Ranasal-Joda-Bamberi road built by Tata Steel connects NH 215 at Ranasal Ghati near Joda with Palaspanga and has become an important road in the Keonjhar district. The over three lakhs population in the area has been tremendously benefited by this road link which supports heavy vehicles as well.

» Electrification

A transformer has been provided by Tata Steel to supply electricity in Chigudiapal, Kakudia and Ashokjhar villages in the Sukinda Block and Bichakundi village in Joda municipal area. A substation for electricity was set up at Chingudiapal so that villagers can work beyond sunset.

» Biogas

TSRDS has taken up initiatives for setting up of biogas plants in many villages of Jajpur district.

» Bamberi Water Project
