Rooted in the belief that the empowerment of a region depends on development from within, Tata Steel has always given a lot of emphasis on improving education in the state of Odisha at different levels. The Company has either built or aided in building more than 200 schools in Odisha.
A few major initiatives taken or supported by Tata Steel are:
Institute of Mathematics - Located in Bhubaneshwar, the institute sprawls over an area of 23 acres and has an investment of Rs 14 crores behind it. The building is truly state-of-the-art and is equipped with all modern facilities. The Institute of Mathematics is a joint endeavour of the Government of Odisha, Institute of Mathematics and Tata Steel and works as a repository of knowledge and information. It also helps to bring outstanding people from far and near to share their expertise and also encourages interested students to acquire knowledge beyond their syllabi by creative processes.
J N Tata Technical Education Centre - To build up a capable Odisha, Tata Steel has set up the J N Tata Technical Education Centre at Gopalpur, in collaboration with Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF), in November, 2004. The Institute provides training to the youth of Odisha and transforms them into world-class technical professionals. It is a significant step towards improving employability of the youth of Odisha and preparing them for opportunities arising in the growing industrialisation of the state.
Tata Steel ensures quality education at Joda by running a school that provides free education to the children of the Company employees as well as to other children living in the nearby areas. Two other schools, The St. Theresa School and Joda East ME school are actively supported by Tata Steel.
Tata Steel Parivar Scholarship - This has been designed to help the children of relocated families to access technical and professional courses. Under this programme, the Company provides scholarships to students who wish to undertake graduate and post-graduate professional degree or diploma courses in various disciplines. The scholarship covers the cost of fees and accommodation.
As many as 62 computers and a server along with a well-furnished air-conditioned laboratory has been set up by Tata Steel for Orissa School of Mining Engineering at Keonjhar.
MoU with KISS – This initiative will foster tribal education especially for the children of the Tata Steel Parivar, including the families that have been relocated from Kalinganagar.
Project Shikshya - An education initiative for rural Odisha that includes adult literacy programmes and education for children. School infrastructure development is also facilitated.
Young Astronomer Talent Search - A programme for school students to boost their interest in Science and Astronomy.
Adivasi Vikas Samity Vidyalaya - Tata Steel actively aids this institute for the education of tribal children founded by Padmashree Dr. Tulsi Munda at Seranda. The Company has over the years, upgraded the school facilities by providing classrooms, an office building, toilets, wells, books for the library etc.

Tulasi Munda is a noted social activist and a strong force behind the literacy movement in Odisha.
Coming form a tribal and mining background herself, Tulsi Munda has released hundreds of tribal children from a future as exploited daily labourers by setting up a school in Orissa’s mining area.
Padmashri Tulasi Munda is the de facto head of Adivasi Vikas Samity (AVS), a non-government organisation supported by the India Literacy Project covering 10 villages and temporary settlements. It was co-founded in 1964 by Jahna Dei and Tulasi Munda to address the manifold problems of the area. Adivasi Vikas Samity's intervention has been on the educational front. Its projects target children in the tribal habitations through child education centres. AVS also runs a short-stay home for destitute women in Basudevpur block of Bhadrak district.
Commenting on Tata Steel’s role in supporting and furthering the initiatives of AVS, Padmashree Tulasi Munda said – “I am very pleased with the initiatives that Tata Steel has been undertaking during the past hundred years in our state. It is the only Company which is keen to bring in socio - economic development for the tribal populace.”
